Turning pictures, scans and screenshots into one PDF
Three common jobs
- Phone scans of paper: receipts, forms, letters or homework photographed page by page, sent as one document instead of a dozen pictures.
- Screenshots: a set of captures of a website, an app or a conversation, kept together in order.

Any mix of formats works in one go: iPhone HEIC photos, PNG screenshots and WebP pictures saved from the web can sit side by side in the same document. Drag the rows into the order the pages should have, or paste pictures straight from the clipboard.

With Same as each image, a picture becomes a page at 96 pixels per inch, the size it appears on a normal screen, so a 1920 pixel wide screenshot makes a page 20 inches wide. That is ideal for reading on screen; for printing, choose a paper size and the picture is scaled to fit.
Getting clean scans from a phone
- Light the page evenly, without your shadow or the phone's flash glare on it.
- Hold the phone straight above the page so lines stay parallel, and fill the frame with the paper.
- Crop away the table around the page with crop image before converting, so every page of the PDF is only paper.
A PDF made from pictures holds no text that can be searched or copied. To make it searchable, run it through image to text with Also make a searchable PDF switched on; the pages look the same, with the words recognised underneath.
Quality and file size
With Keep JPG and PNG as they are on, the default, JPG and PNG pictures go into the PDF byte for byte, so nothing is lost and the PDF is about the size of the pictures together. Other formats are converted to JPG at 85 percent, with any transparent areas turned white. Switch the option off to choose a JPEG quality and a maximum size for every picture, PNGs included, which stay PNG; phone photos capped at 2000 pixels make a PDF a fraction of the size that still prints well on an office printer. A PDF you already have can be shrunk with compress PDF.
If something goes wrong
- Pages come out in the wrong order. The order of the list is the order of the pages. Drag the rows, then build again.
- A screenshot page is huge in print. It was made with Same as each image. Choose A4 or Letter instead.
- The PDF is too big to email. Switch off keeping the originals and choose a smaller longest side.

How to compress a PDF without losing quality

Why is my PDF so big?
