AVIF to JPG: what AVIF is, and what converting costs
What AVIF is
AVIF is a picture format built on AV1, a modern video codec, and it is the most efficient format browsers support: in our comparison of JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF, AVIF was about half the size of JPG on high quality photos. That is why image services and many websites now use it. It is also new enough that many editors, office programs, print services and upload forms cannot open it yet.
How much bigger the JPG gets
We saved six photos as AVIF at a typical web setting and converted them with this page's default quality of 90:
| Photo | AVIF | JPG at 90 | Larger by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat, soft background | 82.7 KB | 186 KB | 2.3 times |
| Lake and forest | 334 KB | 758 KB | 2.3 times |
| Coffee in knitted gloves | 197 KB | 304 KB | 1.5 times |
| Neon sign at night | 192 KB | 576 KB | 3.0 times |
| Macaw feathers | 69.6 KB | 314 KB | 4.5 times |
| Sunset | 76.4 KB | 290 KB | 3.8 times |
The JPG shows the same picture as the AVIF, with what AVIF smoothed away still missing. The size is the price of compatibility. If the converted photos are too big for their use, lower the quality to around 80 or cap the longest side; both cut the size far more than they change the look.
When to convert, and when not to
- Convert when a program, form or person cannot open the AVIF: editing, printing, attaching to a document, uploading to a service that refuses it.
- Keep the AVIF for websites, where every current browser shows it, and for storage, where it takes the least space.
- Convert to PNG instead when the picture has transparency or will be edited several times; the image converter writes PNG.
Transparency and colour
AVIF can be transparent; JPG cannot, so see-through areas are filled with the colour you pick, white by default. AVIF can also hold high dynamic range and wide colour pictures. The JPG is made for standard screens, so the brightest highlights of an HDR photo come out at normal brightness.
If something goes wrong
- The file will not decode. Decoding uses your browser. Open the file in a browser tab first: if it does not show there, the browser cannot read it, and an update or another browser may help.
- A logo has a white box. The AVIF had transparency. Pick the background colour, or convert to PNG.
- The JPG is too large. Lower the quality or cap the longest side.
How we tested. Six CC0 photos scaled to 2048 pixels wide, saved as AVIF at quality 60 with libavif, then converted with the MozJPEG encoder and default setting of this tool in Chrome.
Questions and answers
Why convert AVIF to JPG?
JPG is accepted almost everywhere, including older software, email clients and print shops.
Will file size grow?
Usually yes, because AVIF is more efficient than JPG. You can lower the quality to compensate.
Does it need a modern browser?
A browser that can display AVIF, such as current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
